What have i learnt from my EIR journey are to use the internet search facilities better. By knowing how to use the internet search facilities, it helps me a lot when i am carrying out researches not only for EIR but also for other subjects. Besides, i have also learned how to check the reliability and accuracy of the site while getting information. I'm grateful to the lecturer, Ms. Boh  Lin who taught us well and also, really patient when handling our work and our class.

bye.
Trip to iDA
Sunday, 15 July 2012 | 04:26

On 14/7/2012, we went to iDA - iExperience.

After the site visit, here's my reflections for the visit.

1. Which features/facilities are more interesting to you? why?
The 'Next Gen Classroom' is more interesting to me, teaching and learning take on new dimensions where everyone can tap from a wide range of resources, share knowledge and collaborate any time, anywhere.

The classroom is very cool and convenient for the students as well as the teachers, with these technologies, the white board and markers are no longer needed.

This is the board where the teacher can take the attendance
of the class and the students are able to see it on their own screen too.

This is where the teacher share some information (questions)
and the students are able to draw/write without the need of getting up their own seats.

This is the thing where students can gather around and do things together like projects.
They allow us to play games, draw something together with our friends, it operates like windows7.

(it is touch-screen).

My classmates drawing happily

The guy showed us an example of the games, the fishes will follow the finger.

Question:
Will this kind of thing only operate on this table-like thing?
No, as long as you have the programme installed to some 'touch screen' thingy, it will be able to work.

The site visit is more meaningful than what we normally have in school, as we can look and touch on the things we looked. And by touching it, we will understand the thing that are explained better.

Briefly describe ONE ethical issue covered in EIR lecture notes 11&12
Security issues, talking about it, hackers naturally comes into our mind. Besides, there's certain things that will make it even difficult to have a total security. These things are: Connectivity, Extensibility and Complexity.

However, how can we prevent these things from happening?
At iExperience, the guide explain to us about the 'Next Gen NBN' as well as the 'Home Networking'.

Next Gen NBN, "Connecting people to innovative services", the new nationwide ultra high speed optical fibre network, brings new possibilities to the way you live, work, learn and interact.

Home Networking "Unleashing possibilities in your home", New home networking options like wireless, powerline and structured cabling will enable you to access Next Gen services at every corner of your house.

These two things allow us to have the connectivity assured as it will enable us to access Next Gen services at every corner of our house. Besides, the iDA also show us what are the difference between a normal broadband user and the optical fibre network user.

This is when the guide show us the 2 different network connection while downloading the video.
At the left is the optical fibre network while at the right, is the normal broadband network. as we can see from the bar below, the optical fibre network downloads the video faster than the normal one.

While downloading the video, the broadband network video pauses for a few moments often and while the optical fibre network's download just continued without any pauses.

This is when the guide is explaining to us how the fibre network operates and operates with what.

These connection problem can be solved when everyone change it's broadband network to the optical fibre network as the speed is higher than the normal broadband network.

Pictures of the site visit:

we started the guide by a short video.
This is the thing that we can order food by using the net just by touching the sensor thingy,
it is similar to the QR code. We can even use our smartphones to control the details.
we can take photos and edit it ourselves.

Lastly, our group photo,

END.

Practical 6 -- Comparison and Analysis
Wednesday, 13 June 2012 | 01:04
1)Do you think it is more effective to search the invisible web (databases) than using search engines, meta-search or subject directories? Why?

I think it is more effective to search with search engines for my topic. It is because it's more convenient to use and whatever we search for are more easily to be read. Search engines languages are in simple English, hence making it easier for us to understand while Databases are more to journals and articles, which are written by known writers, their language are more complexed. However, this doesn't mean that the information we found using search engine are reliable since we don't know when it is updated or uploaded.

2) Name one Database which you will use for research. Why?

ESBCO Host. Previously i used it to conduct my research on report 1, and i find that this database is very useful in searching related articles which are highly reliable. And the details provided are meticulously written. Besides, the detail given are not only provided in Singapore, other countries were also included. And it is easy to use, convenient, languages are in simple English which made me easier to understand.

Which search tool i like using better?
Sunday, 20 May 2012 | 03:25
After comparing the search tools (Google and lexisnexis), personally i still prefer Google.
Why i like Google?
1) People stopped using wiki although it's content is very helpful, however, due to it's reliability, people tends to use another search tool like Google or Yahoo.

2) To me, Google is the best as it's fast and accurate and fulfils my needs. Google shows me the answer to everything i searched for. We can probably get the results just by around 5-10 seconds.

The statistics of the various search engines
Google topped the chart to be compared with the other search engines.

3) Nowadays, majority of the people stopped using Internet Explorer and started using Google Chrome. While using Google chrome, we can just basically type in the keywords into the URL box. Hence, Google is more convenient in carrying out the searches.

How to search using Google search engine?
E.g. My topic is serious emotional disturbance, i will just need to enter "Serious Emotional Disturbance".

Closed up:
After entering the keywords "Serious Emotional Disturbance", it will automatically go to the page where the results are shown.

This component of Google helps us a lot as people; like me, doesn't like inconvenience and the hassle to go to the actual site of Google.  Hence, this help save us the hassle and allow us to carry out the research easily.

Google search allow us to obtain the results within 0.55 seconds per results. Approximately about 3 million of results are found.
*The speed and amount of results found are according to the topic that you're carrying out the research.

And besides searching for the sites, there's a component that allow us to search for only images.

When you already entered the keywords of your topic and searched, you might suddenly want to search for images, however, you do not want to key in the key words again. Hence, you can just look for the "images" button at the right and click on it. It automatically will bring you to the page with images that are relevant to your key words.

What if you haven't key in the key words/you haven't carry out the search?

We can actually go to the actual site of Google and click on the "images" as shown above. This tool-bar is located at the top of site. After clicking on the "Images" button, we can just simply enter the keywords.

The next page we will see will be:

The images that are relevant to your topic/keywords will be shown as the results.

When our mouse hover over the image, the image will be zoomed in and allow us to see the description of the image.
E.g
It will pop up with it's format, site's link and the size with description.

We can even search the images we want by:
  • Colour
  • Sizes
    - Large, Medium or small;
  • Types
    - Face, Photo, Clip Art or Line drawing;
By having these components in aiding us to search for the images we want, i believe that it will allow us to carry out our searches more efficiently and conveniently.

These are some examples of carrying out the search while using their features. Overall i prefer Google due to it's convenience and also, it can search through worldwide for informations not just one site alone. And many of the results are more reliable when you searched using the "news" component - it will tell you when the article is released and by who it is released (which company). Therefore, it make it's reliability of this article assured. Google also have everything in just a site, e.g. Emails, Calendars, Images, News. We don't need to go from a site to another just to use other special features.

Why the majority of the people would choose Google instead of other search engines?
Basically the most simplest reason in choosing Google instead of other search engines like Lexis is because Google is FREE. By having this free search engine which enable us to do things more than a other normal search engine which usually have no images search tool, why should we get ourselves registered with another search engine which might need to cost us some money? Yes, some people might preferred themselves to register for another search engine and they believed that the search engine will be much more easy or efficient to use. However, the search engine that you used might not give you what you want and the cost that you pay for it might be wasted as it does not seems to be what you thought of it. And usually Google takes just a few seconds to provide answers and fulfil whatever we want to search for. So, why not?

And since the other advanced search engine needs money, hence, lesser people will use that engine. And when we register ourselves to it, we might not be able to understand how to use that tool, hence, wasting our time and cost on that tool.

Why not Yahoo?
Yahoo have only four features while Google has more than that. Yahoo can only search for web, images, videos or news. However, Google can search for more things like maps, places, books. And with it features by segregating the images that Google have found on other sites into it's type, colour and size, it definitely allow us to carry out our search much more faster than having to type e.g. "Blue sunflower". Instead, we can just type, "sunflower" and go to the colour box and click on blue, the results will definitely be blue sunflowers.

Why not Lexisnexis?
One of the most important point of lexisnexis is not free, we have to pay for using. And the results that we search using our keywords might not be relevant. Lastly, the results given are not as fast how Google gives. Google can give us an instant result with only 0.55 seconds per results or even faster.

**Searched on Google**

P/s: You can click on the screen shots to have a larger view & not saying that other tools are not comparable to Google but this is just my personal opinions on these search engines.
